![]() ![]() I personally don't like pixelated rouge-lites and both games do this, but rogue legacy looks much better and has smoother animations (while still being capped at 32). Nuclear thrones is a bit more tactical (until looping into endgame) where I wouldn't classify it as a bullet hell. Theres a lot of downtime in the first few levels of risk of rain and I hate running around an empty map. ![]() The gear earned is permanent so there is clear progression. The game spawns hordes of enemies and bosses that you kill primarily with melee weapons but there are ranged and magic classes as well. That's a really boring problem for the player to solve with no movespeed. Try warhammer: vermintide 2 There are different maps just like risk of rain but there are different objectives to complete each map. Risk of rain has awkward problem where it times you then puts the gate down in a random location and doesn't tell you where. The way the gun RNG works makes it so you always get a decent weapon but it may not the the same one every time. Nuclear throne is highly skill dependent and most of the mutations are comparable and can be combined in cool ways. Risk of rain is much more RNG dependent to the point where playing without the artifacts on isn't very fun. Nuclear throne is a much better game imo. The folks over at /r/roguelites might be more help, but it's an even smaller community than this one, so it may still take a while to get a good response.Įdit: WazHack might be something you'd be interested in as well.Įdit 2: Broforce is another action platformer I've played that feels kind of similar (and has an awesome exaggerated sense of humor), but it doesn't have the roguelike elements (loot, procedural generation, permadeath, etc).Įdit 3: I just saw the bundle mentioned here, and both 99 Levels To Hell and Crystal Catacombs seem a lot like Risk of Rain. Sorry I can't give more help, but unfortunately I haven't played many of these games (I prefer the turn-based overhead play of most rogue likes over the real-time play of most rogue lites). I don't know many other side-scrolling roguelites, but you may want to try Spelunky or Rogue Legacy. Technically, Risk of Rain isn't a roguelike - it's an action platformer with roguelike elements, according to the steam page (it could also be called a rogue lite, which is a term used for a game that has some but not all of the elements that make up a roguelike).
